Sauvages at HOME: Bringing French Learning to Life
Mr Joel Gerardo – MFL Teacher
French GCSE Cinema Morning: a fantastic experience!
Students from U4 and L5 who are studying French enjoyed a special French GCSE cinema morning at HOME in central Manchester, where they watched the “savoir-faire” from the stop-motion animation film Sauvages.
Before the screening, pupils were introduced to key vocabulary they would encounter in the original French version of the film (with English subtitles!). Sauvages explores powerful themes such as the relationship between humans and nature, environmental protection, community, and the courage to stand up for what matters. These ideas resonated strongly with the students and kept them fully engaged throughout the showing.
After the projection, pupils worked through an activity booklet that encouraged them to describe the film in more detail using a rich range of adjectives, while also learning about the stop-motion techniques used to bring the story to life. Presentations were delivered in French by a guest speaker, and pupils were encouraged to respond “en français”, giving them an excellent opportunity to use and recycle the language skills they have developed beyond the classroom walls.
The ecological message of the film, combined with the immersive language experience, helped build students’ confidence and deepen their understanding of key themes relevant to their GCSE studies.
Une expérience fantastique!
