Prep Sports Roundup November 2025

Mrs Nora Lavorini – PE teacher

During lessons this month the pupils have been enthusiastic and continued to work hard to develop their skills.
Nursery and Prep 2 and Prep 3 have participated in gymnastics, Reception and Prep 1 have been learning some dance moves with Miss Stark, and Prep 4, 5 and 6 have been playing short tennis. In the Friday afternoon lessons the Prep 4, 5 and 6 are improving their volleyball and badminton skills during wet weather lessons. The boys have also played hockey and the girls have played netball.

Hockey

Boys V Cheadle Hulme
It was great to host Cheadle Hulme for two 7-a-side hockey fixtures. Although we lost both matches (A team lost 1-0 & B team lost 3-0), it was encouraging to see so many boys enjoying playing hockey. We had a mix of Prep 4,5 & 6, whereas Cheadle Hulme contained mainly Year 6 pupils, many of whom were also club players. The boys adapted well; for many, it was their first experience of a hockey match. Hopefully, this will encourage a few more to join the hockey club on a Wednesday evening from 4-5:30 pm at the school fields (M16 8NA).

Lacrosse

Two teams were entered into the Pop lacrosse tournament held at Whalley Range School. Whilst the pupils have played some lacrosse in PE lessons, particularly in the summer term, it is not one of the main sports that we play. It was a good experience for the pupils to play in a competitive environment in a sport that they are less familiar with. As each game was played, it was so encouraging to see how the pupils progressed, particularly in terms of tactics and understanding of the game. There was great excitement for the final game, the 5th and 6th play-off, as the teams had to play each other. The match was competitive, but in the end the blue team was victorious.

Indoor athletics

The first round of the Manchester Schools Indoor Athletics was eagerly anticipated by the pupils. In September, the boys and girls participated in indoor athletics during their PE lessons. Results for Prep 4, 5 and 6 are recorded, and from these the teams are selected. We had two boys teams and two girls teams selected, so in total 24 children competed. Ten teams in total had entered and St. Bede’s came 2nd and 4th. It was so exciting watching the track races, and so pleasing to see how they improved during the jumps and throws. We now qualify for the Manchester Schools finals in January. Unfortunately we can only take one team, so Mrs Lavorini and Miss Sharp now have the challenge of working out which pupils will be selected to compete!
