Great Fire of London Workshop

Mrs J Eddison – Prep School HLTA & Outdoor Learning Assistant

Last week St Bede’s pupils from prep 2 were supplementing their concept curriculum topic of ‘Greatness’ with an outdoor learning session on the Great Fire of London. Pupils were taken over to the Regis grounds to take part in a lesson that would deepen their learning through collaborative practical activities. Our pupils impressed the visitors with their prior knowledge about the Great Fire; they enthusiastically described the conditions under which the fires started and spread.

The children’s first activity was to build fireproof walls. They had been discussing how the fire spread so fast. They used sticks to build the structure and wattle and daub to strengthen the walls.

Their second activity was to build a bakery for Thomas Farriner’s Pudding Lane bakery. The children could only choose two materials. After building the bakery, they enjoyed assessing their handiwork by spraying their structures with water to see if Thomas stayed dry inside.

This was an unforgettable morning of hands-on learning, which engaged the students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of the curriculum, bringing this topic to life. Prep 2 then enjoyed the mild weather, eating their lunch in the outdoor classroom, before returning to school.
