Prep 5 Viking Day

30 Mar, 2026 | Bede's News

Mrs Claire Casson – Prep 5 teacher

On Thursday, March 19th, the Prep 5 outdoor classroom was transformed into a Viking battleground. Under glorious spring sunshine, our students celebrated Viking Day, the culmination of weeks of hard work exploring Viking history and Norse mythology.
Warriors on the Battlefield.

The highlight of the day saw the children trading their school uniforms for the furs and tunics of Viking warriors. Armed with the shields and weaponry they engineered themselves, the young Norsemen and women put their defensive tactics to the test.

The outdoor classroom became a scene of epic battle re-enactments. The children also formed impenetrable shield walls, which were enthusiastically tested as the “enemy” attempted to break the line with volleys of sponge “rocks.” It was a fantastic display of teamwork, strategy, and high-energy fun.

Riddles and Runes

The immersion continued with a high-stakes Viking Treasure Hunt. This was no ordinary search; to locate their prize, the children had to flex their linguistic muscles. Each clue was written entirely in Viking Runes, requiring the students to translate the ancient script into English before they could move on to the next location.

A Term of Discovery

This joyful day celebrated weeks of work around the Viking world, including:

  • Mythology: Studying the world tree, Yggdrasil, and the legends of the Gods.
  • Literacy: Developing incredible figurative language through dramatic poems and descriptions of icy ocean voyages.
  • Craftsmanship: Creating intricate, embossed-style Viking jewelry and weaponry.

It has been a joy to watch Prep 5 fully immerse themselves in this fascinating topic. They’ve proven that while the Viking age may be over, their spirit of discovery is alive and well!
