Maths Problem Solving Day in the Prep
Miss E Harrison – Prep 4 Teacher & Prep Science Coordinator
Pupils from Reception to Prep 6 recently took part in a special Maths Problem Solving Day. Each class had the chance to explore a variety of puzzles and problem-solving activities designed to stretch their thinking and build confidence in mathematical reasoning.
Throughout the day, children worked in groups to tackle hands-on tasks that encouraged logical thinking, teamwork, and different approaches to solving problems. While many of the challenges appeared simple at first, they often proved much trickier once the solving began.
The workshops featured a bespoke selection of large, practical activities that created a real sense of excitement around maths. From pattern-building to logic-based tasks, each challenge helped develop key skills while keeping the learning enjoyable and engaging.
Problem Solving and Reasoning are important parts of the Maths Curriculum. Events like this give children the opportunity to see maths in a new light—beyond numbers and written work—and show how valuable it is to think clearly, ask questions, and persevere. The energy and enthusiasm shown by pupils throughout the day proved that solving problems can be both rewarding and fun.
