Preparing Our Hearts During Lent

29 Mar, 2026 | Bede's News

Mrs Charlotte Hibbert – College Chaplain

Throughout the season of Lent, our school community has embraced a number of meaningful opportunities to help pupils prepare spiritually and deepen their faith. It has been inspiring to see so many students engaging with these activities and taking time for reflection and prayer during the school day.

One particularly special initiative has been Lectio Divina in the library each Tuesday. This time of quiet reflection with sacred scripture has provided pupils with a beautiful introduction to reading and meditating on the Word of God. Many students have appreciated the calm and reflective atmosphere, allowing them to pause from their busy schedules and encounter scripture in a thoughtful way.

Pupils have also been taking part in the Stations of the Cross, journeying through the final moments of Jesus’ life. This powerful tradition has helped students reflect more deeply on the meaning of Lent and the sacrifice at the heart of the Christian faith.

Fridays have offered further opportunities for prayer through the introduction of Adoration and Confession, which has been very well received by pupils. Many have welcomed the chance to spend quiet time in prayer and, if they wish, to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Alongside these moments of prayer, there have been a number of engaging activities available at break and lunchtime. One popular activity has been the Scripture Tombola, where pupils can draw a piece of scripture to reflect on and take with them throughout the day. In addition, prep pupils have taken home a St Joseph’s Penny Box, encouraging them to collect small donations throughout Lent as a way of supporting those in need.

Overall, it has been wonderful to witness the enthusiasm and openness of our students as they participate in these Lenten activities. Together, our school community continues to grow in faith as we journey through Lent.
