Sixth Form Visit to Jaguar Land Rover Factory
Miss Sarah Manning – Design Technology Teacher
At the start of February, Design Technology and Business students visited the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) facility in Solihull for a tour of the production line. Now in its third year, this annual trip offers students a practical look at large-scale manufacturing and industrial operations.
Precision Engineering in the Body Shop
The visit centred on the state-of-the-art body shop and final assembly line, where students observed the integration of automated robotics and manual assembly. The facility utilises over 300 robots for precision tasks; observing the automated spot-welding of the steel chassis, with sparks flying, provided a memorable look at modern industrial practices.
To navigate the expansive site, the group was transported in style in Generation 5 Land Rover Discoveries, allowing them to experience the finished product and see the scale of the logistics required to keep a major plant operational.
Design Evolution and Market Adaptation
A visit to the museum provided an overview of the Range Rover’s development. The knowledgeable tour guides detailed how the vehicle has been re-engineered over the decades to address:
- Sustainability: Adapting to modern environmental regulations.
- Technological Shifts: The transition from mechanical simplicity to complex electronic systems.
- Market Positioning: Moving from a utility vehicle to a global luxury leader.
Production Scale and Efficiency
The scale of JLR’s output provided a significant talking point for Business students. Although each Range Rover requires 36 hours of cumulative build time, the facility’s optimisation ensures a finished vehicle exits the line every 90 seconds. The group observed the final inspection stage, where new vehicles are driven off the assembly line for the first time.
Real-World Application
The students were a credit to the school, and the guides asked us to share their comments on how impressed they were by their inquisitiveness and maturity. The tour provided valuable real-world connections to their coursework, making it a truly inspiring and educational experience.
