St Bede’s Musical 2025: Godspell
Mr Jonathan Dickson – Head of Drama

St Bede’s College’s recent production of Godspell was a joyful, moving and deeply meaningful celebration of music, faith, and community. Twenty-five years after the musical was last staged at St Bede’s, this vibrant new production brought together students from Upper Third through to Upper Sixth to form a diverse ensemble cast. Set to Stephen Schwartz’s unforgettable music, the cast brought the parables of the Gospel of Matthew vividly to life through song, storytelling and movement
Staged against a contemporary Manchester backdrop, Godspell follows the story of Jesus’ ministry and offers a powerful reminder of love, compassion, forgiveness and the joy of being together. “From the upbeat call and response in O Bless the Lord, My Soul, to the gentle stillness of By My Side, to the irresistible spark of Light of the World”, Musical Director Mr Fletcher says, “the cast has learned how to sing with character and confidence rather than just accuracy.” This was evident to everyone who came to see the show in how the students embodied the show’s message and delivered it exquisitely.
From a student perspective, as with many of the shows at St Bede’s, Godspell was not just a performance, it was a journey. Rehearsals became a space where confidence grew, friendships deepened, and students learned to work together as part of a true ensemble. Through rehearsing harmonies, choreography, and ensemble storytelling, students developed a strong understanding of collaboration. We hope that the experience of being part of a show like Godspell will remain a defining and formative experience of these students’ time at St Bede’s.
The scale of dedication behind the scenes was equally impressive. From the backstage team, lighting and sound, to front-of-house teams, every student played a vital role in bringing the production to life. Their commitment and professionalism created a production that felt polished, joyful, and full of heart, just like the community Godspell celebrates.
A huge thank you to everybody who was involved, from those who shone on stage to the committed crew; everyone poured their heart into this show. Your energy and dedication made Godspell something truly special.
And to all the friends, families, and supporters who filled the audience each night, thank you for cheering our students on and celebrating their achievement. Your enthusiasm helped make this production unforgettable. Godspell was not just a musical, it was a shared experience that uplifted, inspired, and will be remembered long after the final bow.
