December Football Round-up
Mr Sam Griffin – PE Teacher & Head of Football
During December our football teams remained busy with key cup fixtures and tournaments, showcasing their commitment, resilience and teamwork across all year groups. Their dedication continues to be central to the growth and success of our football programme.
U15 Boys
The U15 football team continued their excellent form with a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Litherland High, securing their place in the last 16 of the ESFA National Cup. This result means they will return in the new year still competing in all three of their cup competitions – a fantastic achievement in itself.
U13 Girls
The U13 girls have also gone from strength to strength this season. They travelled to Hull to face Hymers College in round 3 of the ESFA National Cup. After a closely contested match, St Bede’s emerged victorious, progressing to the last 16 of the competition. The girls showed tremendous teamwork and resilience to get the win.
One of the highlights of the month was the U13 girls’ success at the EFL Salford Cup. Six secondary school teams competed in this action-packed tournament at Salford Sports Village, with a place in the regional stage of the national competition – and the chance to represent Salford City FC at Wembley Stadium – up for grabs. After thrilling group games and knockout rounds, St Bede’s were crowned the eventual winners. This triumph now means that they will represent Salford FC in the Area Finals of the EFL Girls Cup, bringing them one step closer to the national stages and the dream of playing at Wembley.
Futsal Tournaments
Both the U13 boys’ and girls’ football teams participated in the Manchester Futsal Tournament at Platt Lane Sports Complex. The tournament provided our players with the chance to showcase their skills in a different format, helping them refine their technical ability – a skill that will benefit them back on the football pitch.
The U13 girls performed exceptionally well, winning three games, drawing one, and only losing to the eventual winners, Wright Robinson, finishing in runner-up position. The U13 boys had an outstanding series of games, winning four and drawing one, all without conceding a goal, and also finished as runners-up, narrowly missing out on the trophy on goal difference.
December has been another successful month for our football teams, and we are immensely proud of the commitment, skill and sportsmanship demonstrated by all our pupils.
