Upper Third Explore Anglo-Saxon Life Through Immersive Workshop
Mr S Howes – Head of English
As part of the English Department’s newly updated Upper Third curriculum, pupils have been studying the theme of Myths and Legends this term, focusing on the Middle English epic Beowulf. To deepen their understanding of the culture, traditions, and values that shaped the tale, pupils took part in an engaging Anglo-Saxon and Viking workshop during their English lessons.
Throughout the day, pupils explored the realities of early medieval life through hands-on activities including battle tactics, warrior training, Anglo-Saxon board games, and amateur archaeology. A highlight of the session was a lively debate in the Witan — the Anglo-Saxon parliament — where pupils discussed leadership, loyalty, and justice in a historical context.
The workshop offered an experiential approach to learning, allowing pupils to connect classroom study with lived history. By stepping into the world of Beowulf, they gained a richer appreciation of Anglo-Saxon society, heroism, and myth — and discovered how stories from over a thousand years ago continue to capture our imaginations today.
