St Bede’s students prove they can run, jump, and throw!
Mr S. Morgan – Head of PE
It has been a busy half-term of athletics competitions, and St Bede’s pupils have performed extremely well. First up was the Year 10 Manchester Schools’ Event, and the St Bede’s teams were competing against 16 other schools in both the girls and boys competitions. In these events, students are only allowed to take part in one athletics event, and students accumulate points for their team depending on where they finish. In the girls’ competition, the team finished a creditable 8th overall with standout performances being L5 Zuriel winning the 200m and U4 Katelynne out-jumping students from the year above to win the High Jump with 1.40m.
Across the boys’ events, there were lots of great performances. Both Oscar and Justin finished 4th in the Triple Jump and Hurdles, and Charlie ran the 1500 in under 5 minutes to finish in the same position. Tobi jumped 1.55m to come 3rd in the High Jump, while Caylen missed out on Long Jump gold by 6cm, jumping 5.55m to silver. Jason won the boys’ only gold in the 200m, being a second faster than the rest of the field, and overall the team finished in an excellent 4th place.
One week later, it was the Year 9 Manchester Schools’ Event with St Bede’s against another 16 schools. Katelynne once again proved too strong for the opposition, winning the High Jump once more, and there were top-three finishes for both L4 Sara in the 100m and L4 Myla in the 800m. In the boys’ events, Mikey ran an incredible 800m in 2 minutes 27 seconds against club runners, to finish 4th. Rishan impressed in the 300m to secure a bronze medal, and Dalyan backed up his Long Jump silver medal from the indoor championships, with another medal performance in 3rd place. Both teams finished as one of the top 5 Schools on the day, which was an incredible achievement against much larger institutions.
The College has also competed in a Year 9 and a Year 8 Manchester league series organised by Sale Harriers. In this competition, points from those two events, and a similar Year 7 event in June, are all added together to determine an overall boys’ and girls’ KS3 winner. We won’t know the outcome until the last event; however, we do know that in the Year 8 competition, Zach won the Discus, Kimmy won the Long Jump, Matthew won the Shot Put, and Deborah won the High Jump. Alia and Victor also came second in their 300m and Javelin events, so we know that the College did well.
Next half term, there are a few further events and what should prove to be a highly competitive College Sports Day in the week commencing 22nd June. Therefore, if any students wish to improve their athletic ability or complete some Sports Day preparation, please attend our Athletics co-curricular club after school on a Monday.
