Prep Sport Roundup
Mr N. Lavorini – PE Teacher
Cricket
Mr McGrath entered a mixed team into the Manchester Schools cricket competition. For many of the team, it was their first experience of competitive cricket. At this age the format is called Dynamo cricket. The rules are slightly adapted, it is a fast paced game, with lots of opportunity for bowling and batting for all players. Luckily, William and Henry were on hand to help the team with bowling technique and field positioning. Both boys play at Whalley Range cricket club, and both batted extremely well. There was also excellent fielding and some superb catches from all the players. Some of the schools we played against had some outstanding players. Although we did not qualify for the final, the matches were close.
End ball
Mr Henderson took a year 6 team to Manchester Grammar School to participate in the Annual End Ball Festival. This is a great opportunity for our Year 6s to play a different sport. It is a mixture of netball and tag rugby, with the aim to place the ball into the end zone. It was great to see all the pupils adapt to a new game and to develop their skills as the matches progressed. Teamwork really improved, and the team were unbeaten at the end of the Festival.
Netball
On the 5th May, the Prep Netball team attended the Manchester Excel Tournament held here at St Bede’s. The competition is classed as high 5 instead of the usual 7-a-side, and all the players play a different position in each half of the match. The girls had a tough group, although they started well with a win over Manley Park, we then played Man High and Beaver Road A, where the rotations did not work in our favour. The girls battled hard but came away with two losses. We then played 2 more matches vs Chorlton Park and Beaver Road B. The girls wanted to finish on a high note and came away with 2 wins to finish. The girls finished fifth overall.
Rounders
On the 18th May, the Prep Rounders team attended the Manchester Excel Tournament held here at St Bede’s. There were four schools that attended the girls’ first match, which was against St Margaret’s; the girls batted first and came away with a score of 12.5. In the field, the girls put into practice what we have been doing in training and fielded very well to come away with the victory. The next game was against Bagley Hall, and the girls showed the same intensity to come away with a 13-1 win. We didn’t have time to play our final match; however, that didn’t matter as both teams had qualified for the Rounders Finals in June.
