Distinguished Scholar Inspires Macbeth Cast Ahead of Summer Production
Mr Jonathan Dickson – Director of Performances
Rehearsals for this year’s highly anticipated production of Macbeth are officially underway, and the cast has already benefited from a truly special experience. We were privileged to welcome Professor Jerome De Groot from the University of Manchester, who visited the company to share his expertise and passion for all things Shakespeare.

Professor de Groot is a highly respected academic, known for his extensive work in literature, cultural history, and adaptation. He has written widely on how classic texts—particularly those of Shakespeare—are reinterpreted across time, helping modern audiences connect with these timeless stories. His engaging approach and deep knowledge have made him a leading voice in the study of how literature continues to shape contemporary culture.
During his visit, Professor de Groot worked closely with students, offering insight into the themes, characters, and dramatic power of Macbeth. He explored the play’s enduring relevance, its psychological complexity, and the challenges—and opportunities—it presents to performers. His session was both informative and inspiring, giving students a richer understanding of the text while encouraging them to take bold and imaginative approaches in rehearsal.
Most importantly, his enthusiasm was infectious. Students left the workshop not only more informed, but genuinely excited about bringing this iconic tragedy to life on stage. As rehearsals continue, that energy is already evident in the rehearsal room, with the cast embracing the ambition and intensity that Macbeth demands.
We are incredibly grateful to Professor De Groot for taking the time to support our students at such an important stage in the process. His contribution has set a strong foundation for what promises to be a compelling and powerful production.
We look forward to welcoming audiences on the 23rd and 24th June to see the results of this exciting journey. It is a performance not to be missed.
