Life on Death Row

Mrs Hannah Cosgrove – Head of RE

The Upper Fourth had a truly eye-opening session recently when we welcomed Mary Hardiman from the charity Life Lines. Mary spoke movingly about her long standing work supporting prisoners on Death Row in the United States. By sharing stories of her pen pals in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, she gave the students a rare, and at times sobering, glimpse into the lives of those facing the ultimate sanction.

Mary spoke about how her Catholic faith drives her to offer friendship and kindness to those the world often writes off as outcasts. The students were particularly struck by the “lived reality” of the Row; Mary described the crushing loneliness of 23-hour isolation, the cramped, cage-like cells, and even showed photos of the dismal food provided to inmates.

It wasn’t just about the conditions, though. We spent time looking at the “why” behind the crimes, discussing how trauma and unstable upbringings often play a role in the path to prison. It was a profound morning that forced us all to think hard about the tension between seeing justice served and respecting the basic human dignity that Christians believe everyone possesses. Our students will now return to their GCSE ‘Crime and Punishment’ studies with a much deeper, more compassionate perspective on these complex issues.
