Francisco’s Winning Code

27 Apr, 2026 | Bede's News

St Bede’s Computer science club competition winning game design

Mr Jerome Lalley – Prep Teacher

At our Prep School coding club on Fridays, one of our recent challenges was to get the pupils to design a maze game for the Twinkl community collection competition. The club is open to Prep 6 pupils and is full of bright sparks, but Francisco has truly taken innovation to the next level. Combining a passion for computer science with a keen interest in science, Francisco designed an interactive maze game using Scratch that became the secret weapon in our recent prize-winning competition entry with Twinkl!

The competition’s theme was “Making things happen,” a complex topic for any young computer scientist. While other teams relied on posters and dioramas, Francisco decided to code a game from Scratch, literally!. His game, titled A maze game, challenged players to get their sprite, in Francisco’s case, a chicken, to escape from a maze and included several graduated mazes.

The judges were blown away by the sophisticated logic behind his code. Not only did the game demonstrate a deep understanding of code, but it also engaged the audience in a way a static display never could. Thanks to Francisco’s technical skills and creative vision, our school has won a £150 LEGO voucher!

We are incredibly proud of Francisco, a regular at our Friday Prep 6 coding club. He has shown us all that with a bit of code and a lot of imagination, you can solve real-world problems. Well done, Francisco!
