Mr J Lalley – Prep teacher
Exciting fun on the Manai Straits for our Prep!
Pupils from the Prep swapped their classrooms for the scenic Menai Straits, embarking on a thrilling three-day residential trip at the Plas Menai watersports centre. The action-packed adventure pushed our students out of their comfort zones, building resilience, camaraderie, and character.
Once we arrived, pupils were split into three groups and took to the water for a masterclass in windsurfing, catamaran sailing or dinghy sailing. Under the careful guidance of the centre’s seasoned instructors, the students learned the fundamentals of sailing and steering the craft. Though there were a few spectacular splashes along the Menai Strait, the morning was filled with laughter, perseverance, and plenty of triumphant moments as students found their windsurfing rhythm.
During the first evening after our very nice and filling meal, we enjoyed an archery session and a campfire. Both these activities allowed our pupils to relax and unwind after a thrilling day spent on the sea learning new skills.
The aquatic adventures continued on Thursday morning with windsurfing, dinghy sailing and catamaran sailing. Divided into small groups, our young sailors learned the ropes of rigging, steering, and catching the breeze. The catamarans offered an especially fast-paced thrill, gliding swiftly across the water and giving the pupils a fantastic, hands-on understanding of wind power and teamwork.
As the sun set on the stunning North Wales horizon, the physical exertion of the day gave way to relaxation and reflection. After a hearty evening meal, the pupils gathered around a crackling campfire. Toasting marshmallows, listening to stories, beneath the stars provided the perfect atmosphere to unwind. The campfire brought the year group closer together, allowing them to celebrate their individual achievements and the memories they had built.
On Friday morning the group faced the Plas Menai high ropes course. Suspended high above the ground, pupils tackled various dangling obstacles and rope wires, testing their balance and bravery. It was a brilliant test of teamwork, as they cheered each other on and stepped up to support their peers in conquering fears and navigating the exhilarating aerial challenges.
This two-day residential was an unforgettable experience that perfectly captured the character-building ethos we champion at St Bede’s College Prep. By engaging in these dynamic outdoor and water-based activities, our pupils learned to face challenges head-on, support one another, and build a resilient mindset. The trip to Plas Menai left our students energized, confident and eager for their next great school adventure.
St Bede’s were fondly remembered by several of the instructors when the senior rugby squad used to go with Mr Rafferty and Mr Lalley from 2007 – 2013.
