April Careers Update: Big Builds, AI-Proof Jobs, and Beyond!
April may have been a short month with the holidays, but we’ve still managed to pack it with career inspiration! As Manchester continues its massive expansion, we’re making sure our students are ready to grab the best opportunities the city has to offer.
Building the Future (literally!)
We were thrilled to welcome James Bruce from GMI Construction for a great assembly with our U4s. He highlighted the incredible projects happening right on our doorstep as Manchester’s skyline evolves. Best of all? Most jobs in this sector are ‘AI-proof’ – secure, future-ready careers that robots can’t replace!
To Serve and Protect
The speaker programme continues this month as we welcome Greater Manchester Police. They’ll be chatting with students about the vast array of roles within the force – from frontline officers to digital forensics and community outreach to show that there’s a lot more to policing than what we see on TV.
Looking Ahead: L5 Career Missions
Our one-to-one careers meetings are now in full swing, with a laser focus on our L5 students. They are entering their most important year yet, and we’re here to help them navigate those big academic transitions.
To help them navigate the growing array of choices and opportunities open to them, it is always useful to keep an eye on the local labour market information, so here is the latest round up.
Manchester 2026: Why our city is the ultimate launchpad for your child!
As we move through 2026, Manchester isn’t just growing—it’s outstripping the rest of the UK! Whether your child is a tech whiz, a creative soul, or a future scientist, our city is officially the place to be.
The “Frontier” Five: Where the Jobs Are
The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has pinpointed five sectors where the city is leading the pack. If your child is looking for a future-proof career, keep these on your radar:
- The Digital Powerhouse: we’re sitting in a £5 billion tech ecosystem. Manchester now has the largest AI workforce outside London. Think high-demand roles like Back-end Developers and Data Managers.
- Lights, Camera, Action!: With a fresh £10.5 million Screen Production Fund hitting MediaCityUK this spring, we’re on track to be the UK’s top creative hub outside London by 2028.
- The Life-Savers: The Oxford Road Corridor is a global leader in Health Innovation, already employing 200,000 people in R&D and clinical roles.
- The Green Pioneers: Nearly 60,000 people here are already working in the “Green Economy.” Massive projects like the Carrington Energy Campus mean huge demand for eco-engineers and building specialists.
- Future Factories: Advanced Manufacturing is getting a 2026 makeover with AI and Robotics—perfect for kids interested in aerospace or car design.
