St Bede’s Celebrates 150 Years of Music and Community at Landmark Bridgewater Hall Concert

A spectacular evening brought together Bedians past and present to honour a century and a half of musical tradition and Manchester heritage.

St Bede’s College marked its 150th anniversary with a magnificent concert on Friday 20 March 2026 at the prestigious Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. The event brought together the whole school community, alongside returning alumni and friends of the College, for a truly memorable evening of musical celebration.

In a powerful display of the Bedian spirit, the concert featured every pupil from Prep 3 through to the Upper Sixth. The ensemble was a remarkable collaboration of current pupils, staff, peripatetic teachers and alumni, further strengthened by the addition of students from the Royal Northern College of Music.

The carefully curated programme reflected the rich variety of music that forms part of daily life at St Bede’s. The orchestra accompanied a wide repertoire, from classical works including Schubert’s Ave Maria and Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King, which itself premiered 150 years ago, to the much-loved College hymn New Praises. Moving into contemporary music and musical theatre, the audience was treated to powerful renditions of George Michael’s Freedom, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, and the stirring ensemble number One Day More from Les Misérables.

A particular highlight of the evening was a special ‘Manchester mashup’, celebrating the musical heritage of the city that St Bede’s proudly calls home. Paying tribute to a city that has influenced popular music for generations, the performance featured iconic tracks from local legends including Joy Division, The Happy Mondays and Oasis.

Mr Dickson, Director of Performances at St Bede’s College, said: “This has been a once-in-a-lifetime project to be part of, and I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to showcase to our families and friends what St Bede’s College does best. Our College has always placed great value on creativity, collaboration and the confidence that comes from performing together; tonight’s concert reflects that spirit in the most wonderful way.

“I am immensely proud that many of our alumni have chosen to return and perform this evening. Their presence is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of a Bedian education.”

Mr Fletcher, Director of Music, added: “Music at St Bede’s has always been about collaboration, and this evening brings together many parts of the College’s musical life. Tonight’s concert celebrates not only St Bede’s, but also the city that the College proudly calls home. It is wonderful to welcome so many alumni back to perform alongside our current pupils.”

The concert was the culmination of a term of dedicated rehearsals, reflecting the continued effort, patience and enthusiasm of both pupils and staff. As the final notes rang out across Bridgewater Hall, it was a fitting tribute to an outstanding school that values every child as a unique and talented young person.

The College extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating 150 years of education, community and talent. Here is to the next 150 years of St Bede’s College.
